As we age, our bodies change. This can make it difficult to find clothes that fit well and flatter our figure. But it doesn't have to be impossible. Keeping just a few simple things in mind, you can find the right style and clothes for your body type over 50.
Let’s talk about the 5 main female body types and the characteristics of each first:
1. Inverted triangle:
• Broad shoulders and bust, with hips narrower than the shoulders.
• Often have a well-defined waistline.
• Weight gain is more noticeable in the upper body and bust area.
2. Rectangle: a straight figure with little definition in the waist.
• Bust, waist, and hips have similar measurements, creating a straight up-and-down silhouette.
• Little waist definition and weight gain is distributed evenly throughout the body.
• Often have an athletic or slender frame.
3. Apple: weight is carried mostly in the midsection
• Fullness is mainly in the midsection with a less defined waist.
• Bust is often larger and more prominent compared to the hips.
• Weight gain tends to concentrate around the abdomen and upper body.
4. Hourglass:
• Bust and hips are relatively balanced with a well-defined waist.
• Curvy and proportional silhouette, with the hips and bust measuring similar or close in size.

Remember, body types are not about judgment or limitations but rather understanding and embracing your unique features. So, what types of clothes work best for each of the 5 body types?
1) Inverted triangle: choose clothes that balance out balance the upper body and add fullness to the lower body.
Clothing examples:
Shift dresses and A-line styles
A blouse with ruffles on the shoulders and a midi skirt
Jeans: silhouettes that have volume/room in the hips or have a wider leg. Pockets and hip embellishments are encouraged.
2) Rectangle: choose clothes that create curves and add definition to the waist.
Clothing examples:
Empire line dresses, princess seam dresses, and wrap dresses. A belt is a must-have because it can change the shape of any dress (even shapeless ones)
Peplum tops
Jeans: slim-fit jeans, straight-leg jeans add more volume. Bootcut: Flare jeans are great for adding interest and making the legs appear longer.
3) Apple: choose clothes that define your waist, elongate the torso, and creates a balanced appearance.
Clothing examples:
Tailored jackets that have a nice v shape at the top.
Wide leg jeans are fantastic on apple shapes; they hug the waist and skim straight down to create slightly broader hips.
Ruched top or ruched dress - the eye is tricked into believing that the extra fabrics on the garments are what’s causing the volume.
4) Hourglass: choose clothes that accentuate your curves and highlight your curves.
Clothing examples:
A fitted black dress with a statement necklace
Jeans: simple and clean styles such as classic bootcut or straight leg are best for the hourglass-shaped body. Wide-legged, loose-fitting, and slightly tapered jeans also work well. Jeans should be mid- or high-rise to elongate the legs.
Monochromatic colors: wearing one color from head to toe, is a great trick. The color chosen can be any color you like– the slimming effect will be the same.
5) Pear: choose clothes that balance the upper body and draw attention upwards
Clothing examples:
A-line dresses.
Brightly colored or patterned tops with wide necklines that have embellishments and full sleeves.
Slim your hips by wearing dark-colored shorts, skirts, or pants that are wide-leg, bootcut, or flared.

• Choose clothes that are age appropriate. This doesn't mean you have to dress like a frumpy old lady. But it does mean avoiding clothes that are too revealing or too young for you.
• The neckline of an outfit changes the look entirely, whether you realize it or not. V-necklines are something to favor when you have a goal of looking slimmer, as they provide a lengthening effect to the chest and torso area of the body that gives the illusion of a slimmer body.
• Focus on fit. Clothes that fit well will make you look and feel your best. So, take the time to find clothes that are the right size and that flatter your figure, be ok to size up to get a better fit!
• Don't be afraid to dress up. Just because you're over 50 doesn't mean you can't wear heels or a dress. In fact, dressing up can be a great way to boost your confidence and feel more attractive.
• Accessorize wisely. The right accessories can add great style to your outfit, caution: less is more, if the pieces are big!
